Rudolph Melville Amiel (Rudy, Parisienne, Uncle Rudy, grandpa, dad) was born on January 28, 1935, in Kingston Jamaica to Ethlyn Wilson Gayle and Roderick Amiel. He was the youngest of five children, four boys and one girl. He grew up in Trench Town and attended Boy’s Town under the management and leadership of its founding member, Rev. Father Hugh Sherlock, whom he credits for his guidance and mentoring that molded him into the well-mannered and disciplined gentleman he became.
In 1956, Rudy traveled to London to join his brothers and his sister Bea, he stayed for several years and returned to Jamaica later. On his return, he ventured into the world of men’s fashion, where he worked with the Hannah group of companies at their flagship men’s store A.G. Hannah and then transferred to La Parisienne where he was not just a stellar employee, but a prominent figure in men’s fashion in Jamaica often dubbed “the best dressed man in town” a tradition he maintained for the rest of his life. You would never see him not well attired. As they say in Jamaica, “him sharper than a Gillet.”
After leaving the fashion world he became an entrepreneur and opened Zaraks, a popular restaurant and nightclub in Kingston where famous Jamaican musicians such as Skalaties greats Roland Alphonso, Don Drummond, and Tommy McCook would perform regular jazz sessions. While his family managed the business, he went to work with Norwegian Caribbean Cruise on the M.S. Starward, where he travelled extensively. He also worked on some of the Disney Cruises before retiring from that industry, he then traveled to New York, Maryland, Atlanta before retiring to Ft. Lauderdale.
Rudy was preceded in death by his wife, Diana; his son Richard Amiel (Switzerland) and bothers, Lindo, Son and Stanley (London). He leaves to cherish his memory; his loving sister, Bea, the only surviving sibling who lives in London. His children Juliet Simpson (London), Asher Amiel, Trisha Amiel Pugh, and Rudolph Amiel (Shaps), grandchildren, Zari Ho-Choy-Monk, Zoe Ho-Choy, Christian and Cameron Pugh all in the USA, Sebastian Amiel, Alex Amiel, Benji Amiel and Aaliyah Amiel (Switzerland), grand and great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and relatives.
