Rose Marie (Ostroska) Smith
Born on March 26, 1933, in Pittsburgh, PA.- Passed away on August 1, 2025, in Plantation, FL.
Rose (or Rosie when we wanted to tease her) passed away peacefully and her journey along the dementia highway has come to an end. She is survived by her daughters Donna (John) Higgins, Dolores Smith, grandchild Sami Higgins, along with many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.
Rose was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband Joseph F. Smith, her parents Louis and Louise (Poprijan) Ostroska, sisters Milly, Jenny, and brother Louis.
Born and raised in the Lawrenceville neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Rose graduated from Schenley High School in 1950. She then worked for Kroger grocery until her marriage to Joe Smith in July 1956. In November 1956 the coupled relocated to Miami, Florida as Joe began his air carrier career with Eastern Airlines. This was followed by moves to the Newark, New Jersey area, Pittsburgh, Jeddah, Saudia Arabia, and finally settling back in south Florida in 1974.
While in Jeddah, Rose volunteered as an assistant Girl Scout leader when her daughters were scouts, taught CCD classes, joined a bridge club, rosary prayer group, women’s softball league, and playing tennis with Joe on his days off.
Once the family relocated back to south Florida, Rose continued her love of sports by joining bowling leagues, and women’s tennis league. Additionally, she loved watching sports, especially football (pro, college, and high school) and tennis, playing cards, dancing Polkas, and spending time with family and friends.
Rose will be missed by all who had the good fortune and privilege to know her. In lieu of flowers the family asks you to consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association, or charity of your choice.
Her journey will be honored with a Mass at Saint David Catholic Church in Davie, Florida on September 19, 2025 at 10:00 AM with an interment at the South Florida National Cemetery located at 6501 S State Rd 7, Lake Worth, FL 33449.
