Richard C. Gust

Richard Charles Gust, age 85, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2026, surrounded by his family. Born on September 7, 1940, Richard was the son of Jack and Sarah Gust and the youngest of three children, with two older sisters, the late Anita Besman and the late Edna Stamp. He spent his youth in New York City, growing up in the Bronx, where he became a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees and New York Giants.

After high school, Richard served in the U.S. Army. He attended Long Island University while working and helping to support his family. Richard went on to build a successful career at Shell Oil where he worked as a sales executive for more than 30 years. His career with Shell took him around the world and brought his family across the country several times.

Richard married the late Carol Ann Berger, with whom he shared more than 50 years of faithful marriage. Together, they built a life centered on family and friendship. Richard was a loving husband and a deeply devoted father to his three children, Caroline Barta, Christopher Gust, and David Gust. He worked hard, made countless sacrifices, and always put his family first. He took tremendous pride in his eight grandsons and cherished his many friends, whose lives were enriched by his warmth, generosity, humor, and loyal friendship.

Richard had a lifelong passion for 1950s and 1960s rock 'n' roll and an impressive command of trivia, especially when it came to sports, geography, music, and the many other subjects that captured his interest. He was an avid tennis player and golfer. Most of all, Richard loved people. He had a real gift for making others feel welcome. He went out of his way to greet people, strike up a conversation, and bring a smile to someone’s day. He loved telling stories, was quick-witted, and always seemed to have a joke or story for every occasion. With his humor, warmth, and easy way with people, he could brighten any room.

Richard will be remembered for his love of family, his generous spirit, his quick wit, and the joy he brought to those around him. His legacy lives on in the traditions he carried forward, the stories he told, and the love he leaves with his family and friends.
