Listen to Obituary

Maxine Lennon, a longtime resident of Plantation and native Floridian, passed away peacefully in her home. Maxine was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many. Maxine was born with the name Osha Maxine Strange, but she went by Maxine.

She was born in Miami, Florida. Her parents were William C. Strange and Bess Carson. She had a sister named Margaret. She grew up in Davie, Florida which back then was a small town where everyone knew each other. She went to Davie Elementary which is now a historical site called Old Davie School. She went to Fort Lauderdale Middle School and High School where she enjoyed youth clubs and even liked to surf. On Sundays, she loved to go to her grandmother’s house.  For many years up to last year, she enjoyed going to The Carson Family Reunion to see her very large family with her grandparents having had twelve children.

After school, she worked at the courthouse where she met the love of her life, John Lennon when he came in to apply for a construction permit. They dated for five months and were married in 1961. They were blessed with two children, John and Kelly. Maxine was involved in her children's lives as she was a band parent at South Plantation High School. She went to every football game, fund-raiser, and band trip from 1977 to 1985. After her children were grown, she started in the travel business. She also worked with the Scottish American Society of South Florida helping with their scholarship program. She was involved in her church, Plantation Presbyterian Church becoming an elder and deacon there.  She also loved spending time with her friends by playing cards, going to dinner, and attending concerts.  She loved hot coffee, sweet treats, gardening, the bagpipes and holiday music.  Her favorite holiday was Christmas. She loved decorating her tree with ornaments given to her from all over the world.  Her family all loved her banana bread she made to have on Christmas morning.

Maxine will be deeply missed by her son, John Lennon.  III and daughter-in-law, Lisa, her daughter Kelly Karge and son-in-law, Manny, and her grandchildren, Christopher and his wife, Cherry, and granddaughter, Meghan. Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, John and sister Margaret along with her parents.
