Wife, Mother, and Grandmother Monique Danielle (Basil) Refkin, 62, passed away on August 21, 2024, with her devoted husband Steven, by her side. A long-time resident of Florida, she spent the last twenty-five years in Plantation, which she called home.
Born on September 11, 1961, in Manhattan, New York, she was raised in Palm Beach, Florida, and became a celebrated debutante in Chicago. She completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at Barat College in Lake Forest, IL, and applied those skills to the real estate and legal fields.
Known for being a loving, caring, nurturing friend and mentor; her passion was relationships. She served as the devoted keeper of her family's history, meticulously maintaining archives of photographs and memorabilia, and recalling every significant family event with clarity. An engaging storyteller, using “Monique-inisms” was her preferred method of communication.
Returning to Florida as an adult, Monique married her college sweetheart, Steven Refkin, 37 years ago and embraced motherhood with enthusiasm. She was deeply involved in her daughter’s education, serving on the PTA board at Sandpiper Elementary and the PTO board at American Heritage, and delighting in her role as Cookie Mom for the Girl Scouts.
Monique spent three decades at the Law Offices of Steven A. Mason, where she thrived as Office Manager and Legal Secretary. Her real passion, however, lay in organizing events and parties, a skill she mastered with a blend of creativity and precision. Becoming a grandmother four years ago brought her unparalleled joy. Known for her sociability and kindness, she deeply impacted her community and supported charities such as Clueless on Las Olas, Women in Distress, Poverello House, and the AIDS Foundation in honor of her late brother-in-law, Randy Refkin.
Surviving Monique are her husband, Steven; daughter, Courtney Danielle (Joseph Heath); grandson, Preston Daniel Heath; and sisters, Michelle (Jeff) Mariola, Stephanie (Bob) Christie, and Gigi (Steve) Bolman. She was predeceased by her parents, Peter and Danielle F. Basil, and her sister, Nikki Goodrich.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Monique's favored charity, Women in Distress, at https://widbroward.org/, or a charity of your choice, honoring her legacy of generosity and compassion.
