Luz Graciela Montenegro, an epitome of unconditional love and sacrifice, passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness. Born in Panama City, Panama, to the late Eugenio and Francisca Montenegro, Luz had a calling to serve others. Upon graduating from the University of Panama she began her career as a professor of education. After marrying, she hoped for more for her young family. With courage in her heart, she left home and sought opportunity in the United States of America.
Upon settling in South Florida, Luz endured language barriers and multiple odd jobs to secure a brighter future for her children. She eventually established a rewarding career in nursing. She also traveled across the USA, Europe, and Australia with friends and family. Her children attended college, built successful careers, and created loving families. Luz’s greatest joy was witnessing her children achieve the American dream.
A loyal friend and devoted Catholic, Luz visited families and the sick while serving as president of the All Saints Catholic Church chapter of the Legion of Mary. Her playful spirit, beautiful smile, and steadfast faith will be deeply missed by her children, Rick (Frances) and Janice (Fred), her grandson, Miguel, and all who knew her. Luz may be gone, but her legacy of resilience and devotion lives on.
Luz’s family would like to give heartfelt thanks to the caregiving staff at Addington Place of Brunswick, Heritage Oaks of St. Simons Island and the teams at Hearth and Affinis Hospices for caring for her like family.
Visitation will be held at T.M. Ralph Funeral Home in Sunrise, Florida on September 23 from 5pm-7pm. A funeral mass will be held at All Saints Catholic Church in Sunrise, Florida on September 24 at 11am immediately followed by burial service at Our Lady Queen of Heaven in North Lauderdale, Florida.
