Jeanne Elizabeth Cheatham, born on December 2, 1929, in Washington, DC, passed away peacefully at home on December 19, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was 96 years old and lived a life filled with purpose, compassion, and love.

Jeanne's career was marked by a profound dedication to the welfare of children. As a first-grade teacher, she inspired countless students throughout her years in education, imparting both knowledge and kindness. Later, she took on the role of a Guardian ad Litem, where over a well-recognized ten-year span, she guided young adults through challenging circumstances, helping them to envision and strive for a better future. Her commitment to nurturing the next generation was fueled by her deep concern for their protection and welfare.

She earned her Bachelor's degree in Psychology with honors from the University of Richmond, VA, where she often remarked that the best aspect of her college experience was meeting her husband, Russ, with whom she shared 65 wonderful years of marriage before his passing on May 31, 2018. Their bond was evident not only in their life together but also in their shared interests and joy for each other's company.

Jeanne cherished spending time with her family, and a significant part of her life was devoted to being a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She found great happiness in the company of her loved ones, including her daughter Courtney Cheatham Bell and son Christopher A. Cheatham. She welcomed her family into her home in Plantation, FL, where she spent many hours tending to her garden, reading, and playing bridge with friends from the local area. Jeanne and Russ were avid fans of the Miami Dolphins, and they rarely missed a Sunday home game during the fall season, sharing these moments with friends and family alike.

In addition to her immediate family, Jeanne is survived by her son-in-law, Stephen Patrick Bell; her brother, William Goulding of Raleigh, NC; and her cherished grandchildren: Christopher J. Cheatham (C.J.), Russell Lyle Cheatham, IV, Caroline Cheatham, and Claire Elizabeth Cheatham.

Jeanne was preceded in death by her parents, Viola Francis Goulding and Samuel Wirt (S.W.) Goulding; her husband, Russell Lyle Cheatham, Jr.; and her son, Russell Lyle Cheatham, III, who passed away on August 30, 2025.

As she completes her journey, Jeanne leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and dedication to the greater good. The family will hold a private service in Lexington, VA, to honor her life and the impact she made on those around her.
