James Gordon Weinstock, 70, of North Lauderdale, Florida, died on March 20, 2026. James was born May 21, 1955 in New York City, the eldest of three Weinstock boys. He grew up in Tenafly, New Jersey, until moving with his family to Fort Lauderdale at the age of 16 in 1971. James attended Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale and excelled academically. He was admitted to Columbia University in New York, which he attended for one year. He graduated from Florida International University with a degree in Theater. After graduating, James lived in Miami and worked in production for various theaters in the Miami area. After several years, James attended and graduated from law school at the University of Florida. James spent most of his working life as an attorney.
On February 3, 2000, James married Karen Williams. They had three children together: James Marshall Weinstock (born August 11, 1999), Bruce Stanton Weinstock (born January 27, 2002) and Rebekah Bernice Weinstock (born October 3, 2004). James was a loving father. When his children were infants and toddlers, James read to them at night and rocked them to sleep. As they grew, James stayed involved in their activities, attending athletic practices and coaching his son’s soccer team. James was kind and compassionate. He loved animals, especially his dogs, Chanel and Jefe.
He was a lover of sports from the time he was a little boy attending New York Ranger hockey games with his parents. In his later years James was working on a screenplay based on the life of his father, Robert Weinstock, who founded the jazz record label Prestige Records.
Throughout his life, James retained his love for theater, films and music, especially his favorite musician Bob Dylan. Music was one of the ways James expressed love. He shared meaningful traditions with his children, from collecting coins and CDs to spending time together over simple breakfasts through the years. Each night, he prayed over his children in what he lovingly called “their blessing,” always making sure they felt cared for and supported. His love, voice, and stories will continue to live on through his family and the memories he created with those closest to him.
James is survived by his wife Karen, sons James and Bruce, daughter Rebekah, his mother Joan and his brother Bruce, and grandsons Ason Micah Morgan and Jahseh James Weinstock, all residing in Broward County, Florida. He is preceded in death by his father Robert and his brother Philip.
A memorial service will be held on April 18th at 1 pm at Plantation Community Church, 6501 W. Broward Blvd., Plantation, Florida. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Humane Society of Broward County (https://humanebroward.com/donate/) or Plantation Community Church (pccflorida.org).
