Listen to Obituary

George Walter Weaver, family man, community business leader, world traveler, and dessert connoisseur, passed peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, September 28, 2025. His life began in Washington, DC, where he was born on March 22, 1937 to Bryce and Carlotta Weaver. Growing up, he worked at his family’s hardware store, W.T. Weaver & Sons, in Georgetown. George eventually went on to pursue a business degree at the University of North Carolina, where he met the love of his life, Helen Wood. He began courting Helen while participating in a school theatre production, where they bonded over their beloved Tar Heels. They wed in Miami, Florida, on June 7, 1958 and eventually settled in Fort Lauderdale, which would serve as the backdrop for sixty-seven years of marriage. During the beginning of their marriage, George served the US Navy on the USS Hunt, a World War II era destroyer, during the Berlin Wall crisis of 1961.His impressive resume would soon boast his many talents and business prowess, starting with a job working in sales with the Procter & Gamble Company, and then with his first entrepreneurial engagement under the guidance of his father-in-law, Frank Wood. From his time at the Seminole Film Processing Company to finding his passion for real estate at Stockton, Whatley, Davin Commercial Real Estate Brokers, he was fully prepared to help found Rauch, Weaver & Millsaps & Company in 1972. George remained active in commercial real estate through July 2025 at Weaver Morrison Commercial Real Estate. He is survived by his devoted wife, Helen, their sons, Jefferson, Britt, Todd, and Russell, their wives, Shelley, Katherine, and Zsa-Zsa, their nine grandchildren: Mark, Catharine, Matthew, Haley, Charlotte, Caroline, Graham, Mason, and Carlton, as well as four great-grandchildren: Theodore, Jameson, Claire Helen, and Emilia. He was predeceased by his brother, James Bryce Weaver. He shared his love for travel with his family, whisking them off to see the sandy beaches of the Caribbean, the stunning nature in Alaska, and even to meet beloved movie characters aboard the Disney Cruise. Generosity was George’s nature; he and Helen took each of his grandchildren following their graduation from high school on a trip to any place in the world of their choosing. But as much as he enjoyed these adventures, he loved coming home to Fort Lauderdale, where he could be found working with his sons at the office, enjoying the view from his beach condo, or ordering a bottle of chilled red wine at the Lauderdale Yacht Club, where he was a member for over 40 years. He left quite an impact on the local community, serving on the Board of Directors (with his great friend John Payne Sr.) for the Buehler Foundation, WPBT Channel 2 PBS, The Little Schoolhouse, and the Broward Sheriffs Advisory Council Board. He was a former president and director of the Commercial and Industrial Real Estate Brokers Association (CIREBA), a past chairman and director of the Fort Lauderdale Economic Advisory Board, and lent his expertise to various committees of the Fort Lauderdale Area Board of Realtors. With his passion for air travel, it is not surprising that he served as a trustee of the Emil Buehler Perpetual Trust, which funds various philanthropic, educational, and aviation-related charities such as the Broward College Buehler Planetarium, the Museum of Science and Discovery in Fort Lauderdale, the Naval Air Museum in Pensacola, Florida, Emery-Riddle Aeronautical University, and the restoration of the Ford Field control tower at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, to name a few.You would be hard-pressed to find him donning anything but a suit and tie; even on vacation he paired slacks with sturdy white sneakers. No dinner was complete without a decadent dessert. George always looked forward to venturing by private jet to Osh Kosh, Wisconsin, and delighted in recounting these trips to friends and family. His coveted collection of old maps and books was extensive, and he had a love for Broadway musicals, often playing the film adaptation of Annie for his grandchildren when they visited and delighting them with his silly faces and tongue-rolling tricks. He was beloved by many and the generations that follow him will carry his legacy of benevolence and hospitality onward. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations can be made to South Florida PBS
