Listen to Obituary

Born in the serene town of Belvedere, Westmoreland, Jamaica, on June 16, 1936, Dorothy Ricketts Dixon graced this world with her presence, leaving an indelible mark on the lives she touched. As the beloved daughter of Zacheria and Ethel Ricketts, her early years were filled with warmth and affection, nurtured by the love of her adoptive parents, John and Albertha Ricketts, who embraced her at the tender age of five.

Dorothy's formative years unfolded in Bethel Town, where she engaged with her education at Bethel Town Primary School. Her academic prowess shone brightly as she excelled in her local examinations, paving the way for her to pursue her passion for nursing at the esteemed Merle Grove High School in Kingston, where she earned her "O Level" status.

Embarking on a noble career in nursing, Dorothy devoted herself wholeheartedly to healthcare, serving as a registered nurse and midwife across several notable institutions, including Kingston Public Hospital, Jubilee Hospital, Hordley Hospital, Mandeville Hospital, Nuttall Memorial Hospital, and Spanish Town Hospital. Her dedication to her profession was unwavering, positively impacting countless lives through her compassionate care.

In 1980, Dorothy made the significant journey with her family to Florida, USA, where she continued her devoted service in nursing until her retirement. A proud member of the Jamaica Nurses Association of Florida, she remained an integral part of the nursing community.

Dorothy's journey through life was enriched by her marriage to Donald Dixon, who continued to hold a cherished role in her life. Together, they raised two children, Jacqueline and Kevin, and though Glen Dixon is now at peace, his memory lives on. The hearts of her stepchildren, Donna, Denise, and Dione, were also filled with her love, alongside her daughter-in-law Rebecca, who held a special place in her heart.

As a doting grandmother, Dorothy's legacy is carried forth by her grandchildren: Leighton, Mizuho, Marcus, Tessa, and her step-grandchildren Dana, Robert, Samiya, Angela, and Camren. The bonds with her nieces and nephews were equally significant, ensuring that her loving spirit resonates through generations.

Known for her radiant smile and welcoming demeanor, Dorothy was a beacon of warmth to all who encountered her. Her cheerful response of “good, good, good!” became a familiar refrain spoken with genuine joy. The fabric of her life wove together family, friendship, and community, and she will be profoundly missed by all, especially the cherished friends who shared in her journey, including those from her beloved residence.

As we celebrate the remarkable life of Dorothy Ricketts Dixon, let us remember her not solely for her passing but for the rich tapestry of love, care, and kindness she bestowed upon the world. May her spirit continue to inspire and guide us all.
