The Service will be displayed on the web page after 11:00AM Monday Morning

Desrene Eleanor Mendez passed peacefully and not afraid on Tuesday, February 16, 2021 at her home after battling pancreatic cancer. Desrene was born on October 26, 1931 in Kingston, Jamaica W.I. She was the fifth child of nine to the late Allan & Winifred Hunter.

Even as a young child, Desi, as she was fondly referred to, dreamed of adventure and travel. She left Jamaica in October 1960 against the wishes of her parents and siblings to find that adventure in America.  When she arrived in New York ready to take on the world, she would meet the love of her life on a blind date. He was older, mature, loved to dance and dressed well. She married Aston on June 24, 1962. After having their two daughters, Desi and Aston decided to have both girls live in Jamaica while they established a good life in America. They moved to Florida in the early 1970’s where they did just that, and then brought both girls back to the states.

As she would state, “It was a hard life, but a good life.” She sponsored her siblings so they could also come to America, she worked long hours to help support her family, and she left her job at Broward Property Appraiser to care for her husband when he fell ill. He passed away in April 2001 and she was devastated. She found comfort in her church at St. Benedict's Episcopal and became an active participant of the Mothers’ Union.

Her life is marked by one of strong faith, being a devoted wife and mother and having a deep love and appreciation for  her entire family and all her friends. She never forgot a birthday or anniversary. She was the life of any party as she would be in the center of the floor dancing.

Desrene is survived by her daughters Jacqueline and son-in-law Stephen, JoAnne and son-in-law Craig, Grandchildren Cindy, Jordan, Bria, Claire and Adam; her brothers Neville, Calvin and Regis; her sisters Shirley and Joan. She also leaves behind numerous loving nieces, nephews, relatives and dear friends.
