Denise Marie Ihrig-Hernandez passed away peacefully at home on October 2, 2025, surrounded by family and friends who loved her dearly.
Denise was born October 21, 1971, in Livingston, New Jersey. She carried a deep pride for her hometown—no matter how much her friends teased her about it. From the time she was young, she knew she wanted to be a teacher. She loved children and believed in the power of teachers to shape good citizens and stronger communities.
She was frighteningly intelligent, with a memory that amazed everyone. A scholar-athlete, she earned records and awards at Metuchen High School, proudly running the 800 meters in 2:16.5. She continued her education and track career at Rutgers University.
Denise’s love of travel took her across the world, always finding joy in exploring with family and friends. She wasn’t just loved—she was adored and respected.
In 2016, Denise was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer and given six months to live. She refused that timeline. For nine more years, she filled her days with laughter, teaching, travel, and time with her family—living more fully than most people ever do.
She leaves behind her three children—Benjamin (24), Amy (22), and Grant (17)—husband, Ivan Hernandez. She was predeceased by her parents, Carol and Conrad Ihrig.
Denise wanted it known: she hated lilies. She wanted her life remembered not as a story of loss, but as an example of how to be good, kind, and to leave the world better than you found it.
