Kent Charles Ottens, 64, of Plantation, Florida, passed away on September 4, 2024, surrounded by his beloved family.
Born in Evanston, Illinois, Kent was the second son of Nathan and Iris Ottens. Raised in Madison, Wisconsin, where he pursued higher education. He would eventually move to South Florida where he graduated from Florida International University. Following his graduation, he embarked on a career that would define his life.
Kent was a man of remarkable dedication and passion. His son Alex fondly remembers him as a kind-hearted man who worked tirelessly, embodying selflessness and a profound love for his family. Known affectionately as “Coach” to many, Kent devoted over 25 years to teaching Physical Education at Plantation Park Elementary, where he cherished the opportunity to work with young students and inspire them through sports. Alongside his teaching career, Kent also served as an EMT for over 20 years, reflecting his unwavering commitment to helping others.
Kent’s enthusiasm for sports, especially football, was a defining aspect of his life. He could often be found cheering on the Miami Dolphins with his trademark enthusiasm, always shouting “Go Fins!!” His passion for sports was only matched by his dedication to his family and his role as a mentor to many students, friends, and colleagues. Kent often spoke with immense pride about his children, and his greatest hope was that they would continue to honor his legacy by making him proud, just as he always believed they would.
Kent was preceded in death by his mother, Iris Ottens. He is survived by his children Alex Rivera, Juliana Ottens, and Karyna Ottens. His life partner/mother of his children, Cybele Rivera. His grandchildren Mia and Jayce. His brothers Rick (Traci), Kurt (Ed), and Rodney (Amy). As well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
Kent Charles Ottens will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy of love, mentorship, and dedication will forever be cherished in the hearts of his family and friends. In the words of his daughter Karyna, 'We will miss you, Daddy.'
